About this species

Yellow buckeye is a tall, graceful native tree known for its smooth gray bark and palmately compound leaves that create a full, rounded canopy. In spring, it produces upright clusters of yellow‑tinged flowers that attract pollinators and distinguish it from the closely related Ohio buckeye. By fall, the tree forms smooth, leathery husks containing shiny brown seeds, though these are typically larger and less spiny than those of Ohio buckeye. Yellow buckeye thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is commonly found in rich hardwood forests and stream valleys across parts of Ohio. Its strong growth, attractive foliage, and seasonal interest make it a valuable component of both natural and managed landscapes.

Planting notes

Yellow buckeye benefits from consistent moisture during establishment and prefers cool, rich soils typical of stream valleys and hardwood forests.
