About this species

Tuliptree, also known as yellow poplar, is a striking native tree recognized for its tall, straight growth and uniquely shaped leaves that resemble a tulip or cat’s head. In late spring, it produces beautiful greenish-yellow flowers with orange centers, though these blooms often go unnoticed because they form high in the canopy. Tuliptree grows rapidly and thrives in deep, well-drained soils, making it a common species in forests, parks, and large landscapes across Ohio. Its light, durable wood is economically valuable, and its nectar-rich flowers support pollinators. With its stately form, distinctive foliage, and ecological importance, tuliptree remains a standout species in both natural and managed settings.

Planting notes

Fast and straight on deep, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Not a tree for droughty ridge tops.
