About this species

Sugar maple is a cherished native tree known for its dense, rounded crown and vibrant fall foliage that ranges from bright yellow to deep orange and red. Its leaves, with five distinct lobes and smooth, U-shaped sinuses, are iconic across Ohio’s forests and neighborhoods. Sugar maple thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is commonly found in hardwood forests where its shade tolerance allows it to grow beneath larger canopy trees before emerging into the upper canopy. Beyond its beauty, sugar maple is economically significant for its high-quality wood and for producing sap used to make maple syrup. Its combination of ecological value, striking appearance, and cultural importance makes sugar maple one of Ohio’s most beloved tree species.

Planting notes

Sugar maple benefits from consistent moisture during establishment and prefers cool, rich soils, making it ideal for large yards, woodland edges, and park settings.
