About this species
Silver maple is a fast-growing native tree known for its deeply lobed leaves with silvery-white undersides that shimmer in the breeze. Its attractive bark and delicate foliage give it a graceful appearance, especially when the wind reveals the contrasting colors of its leaves. Silver maple thrives in moist soils and is commonly found along rivers, floodplains, and low-lying areas, although it also adapts well to urban environments. While its rapid growth provides quick shade and erosion control, the wood can be somewhat brittle, making careful placement important. Despite this, its adaptability, beauty, and ecological value make silver maple a familiar and beneficial presence across Ohio landscapes.
Planting notes
Thrives on wet bottomland and streambanks where few shade trees will grow. Brittle wood — keep it well away from buildings and driveways.
