About this species
Shumard oak is a stately, fast-growing native tree known for its broad, open crown and distinctive, deeply lobed leaves that turn brilliant shades of red in the fall. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and is commonly found in bottomlands, upland forests, and urban landscapes across parts of Ohio. The tree produces large acorns that serve as a valuable food source for wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and birds.
