About this species

Shagbark hickory is a distinctive native tree easily recognized by its thick, peeling bark that forms long, shaggy strips—one of the most memorable features in Ohio’s forests. It grows tall with a strong, straight trunk and a broad crown of compound leaves that turn a warm golden yellow in fall. This species produces large, sweet nuts enclosed in stout husks, providing an important seasonal food source for wildlife such as squirrels, chipmunks, and birds. Thriving in well-drained soils and full sun, shagbark hickory is common in upland forests and woodlands, where its durable wood, ecological benefits, and iconic appearance make it a valuable component of native landscapes.

Planting notes

Deep-rooted; best planted young on well-drained upland sites.
