About this species

Osage-orange is a tough, medium-sized tree known for its bright orange, deeply furrowed bark and distinctive, grapefruit-sized green fruits that have a bumpy, brain-like texture. Its glossy, dark green leaves form a dense, rounded crown that provides ample summer shade. Historically planted as living fences, Osage-orange features stout, thorny branches that create an effective natural barrier. The tree thrives in a wide range of soils, including dry, rocky sites, and is highly tolerant of drought, making it adaptable across much of Ohio. Its exceptionally strong, rot-resistant wood has long been valued for archery bows and fence posts, while its durability and unique appearance make Osage-orange a memorable component of both natural and rural landscapes.

Planting notes

Osage-orange is highly drought-tolerant once established and adapts well to poor or rocky soils, making it suitable for windbreaks, living fences, and restoration sites. Because it develops stout thorns, plant it with care and allow ample space away from high-traffic areas.
