About this species
Ohio buckeye is a distinctive native tree known for its coarse, rounded form and its palmate leaves, which unfold early in spring and give the tree a lush, full appearance. It produces showy yellow-green flower clusters in mid‑spring, followed by the familiar shiny brown seeds, each enclosed in a spiny husk. Ohio buckeye prefers well-drained soils and grows well in both sun and partial shade, making it adaptable to many sites across the state. Though valued for its ornamental qualities and strong cultural connection to Ohio, it’s best planted with awareness of its tendency to drop seeds and its sensitivity to drought, ensuring it is placed where its natural characteristics can be enjoyed without maintenance challenges.
