About this species
Eastern redbud is a beloved native tree celebrated for its early spring display of vibrant pink to magenta blossoms that often appear before the leaves emerge, brightening forests and landscapes across Ohio. Its heart‑shaped leaves unfold shortly after flowering, transitioning from a soft reddish hue to deep green through summer and then to warm yellow in fall. Redbud thrives in well-drained soils and partial to full sun, making it suitable for woodland edges, residential yards, and urban plantings. Its modest size, graceful branching, and ability to support pollinators make redbud a charming and ecologically valuable addition to both natural and managed landscapes.
Planting notes
Because eastern redbud has a relatively shallow root system and a tendency for low branching, give it space to develop its natural form and prune only lightly after flowering if shaping is needed.
