About this species

Chinquapin oak is a durable and adaptable native tree valued for its attractive foliage and high-quality wood. Its leaves are slender, sharply toothed, and glossy green, resembling those of the chestnut, which gives the species its name. In fall, the foliage turns shades of yellow and bronze, adding seasonal interest to the landscape. Chinquapin oak thrives in well-drained, rocky, or limestone-rich soils and is commonly found on slopes, ridges, and open woodlands across Ohio. It produces sweet acorns that are readily consumed by wildlife, making it an ecologically important species as well as a strong, appealing choice for both natural and managed landscapes.

Planting notes

Full sun; tolerates a range of soils. Acorns feed deer, turkey, and songbirds.
