About this species
Chestnut oak is a sturdy, long-lived native tree recognized for its deeply ridged, dark bark and large, leathery leaves with rounded lobes. Commonly found on dry ridgetops and rocky slopes, it is well adapted to poor, acidic soils where few other oak species thrive, making it an important component of Ohio’s upland forests. Its sizable acorns, produced in abundance, serve as a valuable food source for wildlife such as deer, squirrels, and birds.
