About this species

Bur oak is a resilient and long-lived native tree known for its massive trunk, broad crown, and uniquely fringed acorns. Its thick, corky bark and deep root system enable it to withstand drought, fire, and a wide range of soil conditions, making it one of the hardiest oaks in Ohio’s landscapes. The large, deeply lobed leaves create a stately appearance and turn a warm yellow-brown in fall. Bur oak commonly grows in prairies, savannas, and open woodlands, where its impressive size and tolerance for challenging environments make it an anchor species that supports wildlife and strengthens ecosystem resilience.

Planting notes
