About this species

Black walnut is a robust native tree prized for its strong, dark, fine-grained wood and its distinctive, aromatic foliage. It features a tall, straight trunk and an open, rounded crown formed by long, compound leaves that turn golden yellow in fall. In late summer and early fall, the tree produces round, greenish fruits containing rich, flavorful nuts that are highly valued by both wildlife and people. Black walnut thrives in deep, well-drained soils and is commonly found in forests, old fields, and along streams throughout Ohio. Its combination of economic value, ecological importance, and striking appearance makes it a standout species in many natural and managed landscapes.

Planting notes

Plant away from gardens — roots release juglone, a natural compound found in its leaves, roots, and husks that can inhibit or harm sensitive plants growing nearby. Excellent timber value.
