About this species

Black maple is a close relative of sugar maple, distinguished by its drooping leaf lobes, darker bark, and thicker, more leathery foliage. Its leaves typically have three main lobes instead of five and often display a slightly fuzzy underside, giving the tree a uniquely textured appearance. Black maple thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is commonly found in rich hardwood forests across parts of Ohio, where it contributes to vibrant fall color with shades of yellow, orange, and gold. Known for its strong wood and high-quality sap, this species plays an important ecological and cultural role while adding beauty and resilience to the landscape.

Planting notes

Black maple benefits from consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and performs best in protected sites where soil stays cool and rich in organic matter. Minimal pruning is needed, making it a low-maintenance choice for shaded, high-quality forest or landscape settings.
