About this species

Black chokeberry is a hardy native shrub known for its glossy dark green leaves, attractive spring flowers, and nutrient-rich berries. In mid‑spring, it produces clusters of small white blossoms that bring subtle beauty to woodland edges and landscaped settings. By late summer and fall, these flowers develop into shiny black fruits that are highly nutritious and eagerly consumed by birds and other wildlife, though quite tart for human taste. The shrub’s foliage turns vibrant shades of red and purple in autumn, adding striking seasonal color. Thriving in a wide range of soils, including wet or poorly drained sites, black chokeberry is an excellent choice for restoration projects, wildlife plantings, and ornamental landscapes across Ohio.

Planting notes

Black chokeberry establishes easily and requires minimal pruning, though shaping can be done in late winter if needed. Its durability and low-maintenance nature make it a strong choice for both naturalized and ornamental landscapes.
