About this species

American witchhazel is a unique native shrub or small tree known for its unusual flowering time and distinctive flowers with ribbon-like petals. Blooming in late fall—often after most other plants have gone dormant—it produces clusters of fragrant yellow blossoms that brighten woodland understories when little else is in bloom. Its wavy-edged leaves turn warm shades of yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest before dropping. Witchhazel thrives in moist, well-drained soils and partial shade, making it common along forest edges, slopes, and streambanks across Ohio. With its late-season flowers, ecological benefits, and graceful form, American witchhazel is a valuable and eye-catching addition to natural landscapes.

Planting notes

American witchhazel benefits from consistent moisture during establishment but generally requires little pruning or maintenance once mature.
