About this species
American hazelnut is a hardy native shrub valued for its edible nuts and its adaptability to a wide range of growing conditions. Typically forming a dense, multi-stemmed clump, it features rounded, serrated leaves that turn a warm yellow in fall, adding seasonal interest to naturalized landscapes. In late summer to early fall, it produces small, sweet hazelnuts enclosed in leafy husks, which are eagerly consumed by wildlife such as squirrels, birds, and deer. American hazelnut thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for windbreaks, hedgerows, restoration projects, and backyard plantings where both ecological value and productivity are desired.
